Starbuck’s coffee tumblers is a great solution to reduce the waste of paper coffee cups. However, customers tend to forget to bring their tumbler with them or find is as an inconvenience. There needs to be something added to the tumblers that overcomes the inconvenience factor. To solve this problem, we thought of the idea
of pulling the Starbucks Rewards application off the smart phones and transform to a sticker that should be placed on the customer’s coffee tumbler. In order for a customer to receive awards when purchasing their coffee, they would have to bring their reusable coffee cup to scan. This will encourage people to always bring their coffee tumblers with them instead of using the wasteful paper cups. A customer would not be able to use their rewards program without bringing their coffee cup. Also, one does not need phone service to use the rewards card on the coffee cup- which is needed when you want to use you Starbucks card on your smartphone. For the customers who have an existing rewards card, a rewards sticker for the cup will be sent to them in the mail. It is a simple idea that is easy for customers to catch on too. The tumbler will have more value now. One will not want to forget or misplace their tumbler with their coffee money on it. Simply bring your own coffee tumbler with Starbucks sticker attached to get a cup of coffee and a reward. This solution allows every individual in the transaction to gain something. Starbucks will produce less paper cups which reduces waster and production cost, customers receive awards, and also the rewards program builds a stronger relationship between Starbucks and their customer.

  1. Good, but I miss an explication of the design/redesign in term of the 4 concepts of functional design.
